It's common knowledge that using phones, tablets, and computers before bed can negatively impact your sleep. But why exactly does blue light from electronics wreak havoc on our sleep patterns?
Scientific research has shown how blue light exposure at night suppresses the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and shifts our circadian rhythms, resulting in poor quality and disrupted sleep.
A 2015 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that reading an eReader emitting blue-enriched LED light in the hours before bed suppressed melatonin secretion by over 50%. This affected circadian timing and reduced next-morning alertness compared to reading a printed book (Chang et al., 2015).
Similar findings were reported in a 2018 study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research. Participants who wore Blue-Light Blocking Glasses showed significant improvements in insomnia severity, sleep quality and sleep duration compared to controls (Shechter et al., 2018).
This suggests blue light exposure from screens contributes to poor sleep.
Finally, a study in the Journal of Adolescent Health had teenagers wear blue blocker glasses in the evening while using LED screens. Wearing the glasses improved sleep quality, mood and cognitive performance by filtering out blue light (van der Lely et al., 2015).
Multiple scientific studies demonstrate that exposure to blue light from electronics in the evening can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin.
This negatively affects our natural circadian rhythms (i.e. brain hormones) and harms sleep quality and duration.
